Microsoft Passkeys
Kenan-Flagler IT is excited to announce that Passkey login is now available for your Kenan-Flagler Business account.
A passkey is a modern replacement for your password. Instead of typing a string of characters you have to remember, you simply use your mobile device to capture a QR code, then use your mobile device's fingerprint, your face, or your PIN. This allows for the following benefits:
- Sign in faster
- No password to remember
- Works with your mobile device
- Less Multifactor Authentication interruptions
Please note that Microsoft is moving away from traditional methods of Multifactor Authentication including SMS text. We strongly recommend that you enable this login method before Microsoft support is discontinued.
You will need to have Bluetooth enabled on both the computer you are logging into and the mobile device you are using for Passkey login. This will allow you to sign in using the QR code with your phone camera app, without the use of a password. See registration instructions below:

Frequently Asked Questions
What if I get a new phone?
You'll need to set up a new passkey on your new device. Go to mysignins.microsoft.com, remove the old passkey, and add a new one. You can still use your old password temporarily to log in while you do this.
What if I don't have my phone with me?
You can still sign in with your regular password as a backup. Passkeys are an additional option — they don't replace your password until you're fully comfortable with them.
Does this mean the Business School can see my Face ID or fingerprint?
No. Your biometric data (face or fingerprint) never leaves your phone and is never sent to Microsoft or the university. It is only used locally to unlock your phone.
Does my phone need a special app installed?
No app download is required for the QR code scan. Your phone's built-in camera handles it. You will need a reasonably modern iPhone (iOS 16+) or Android (Android 9+) device.
Why does Bluetooth need to be on?
Bluetooth is used to verify that your phone is physically near the computer you're logging into. This prevents someone from stealing your QR code image and using it from another location. You don't need to pair anything — just having Bluetooth turned on is enough.
Is this mandatory?
Passkeys are currently available as an option and are strongly encouraged. Microsoft is moving away from traditional factors of authentication, particularly SMS text. Setting up Passkey login will ensure that you do not have trouble logging in when those changes are made.
Your existing password will continue to work. However, passkeys offer significantly stronger account security, and we recommend all students set one up.
