Antivirus Software Instructions

Microsoft Windows 7

The IT Service Desk currently recommends Microsoft Security Essentials for antivirus and anti-malware protection for students and faculty-staff home computers. The software is available for download at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials.

Windows 8 / 8.1 / 10

Microsoft Security Essentials is not needed for Windows 8, 8.1 or Windows 10.  The software is now called Windows Defender and is automatically built into Windows 8 and Windows 10.

Apple ClamXAV

The current University-owned antivirus solution for Macintosh computers is ClamXAV. This software can be downloaded at http://www.clamxav.com Note: ClamXAV is no longer a free product. Previously, Microsoft System Center Endpoint Protection (SCEP) had been our antivirus solution for faculty and staff's (university funded) computers. Your desktop computer should already have the software and if you have a laptop or another computer which has neither, please contact the IT Service Desk for installation instructions and/or assistance getting it installed.

Antispyware

In addition, due to the constant evolution of spyware/malware, the IT Service Desk recommends a program called Malwarebytes which can be downloaded from http://www.malwarebytes.org. Call the IT Service Desk if you have any questions at (919)962-0792.
